Celebes Half-Beak

First described as Nomorhamphus liemi liemi in 1979 by Vogt, the Celebes Half-Beak is not surprisingly found in the Celebes island of Indonesia (no called Sulawesi). With an elongated body reaching 3 inches, the fish gets its name from a fleshy protuberance at the tip of the lower jaw. The dorsal and anal fins are located near the tail fin, with the ventral fin near the mid-body and the pectoral fins angled up like small wings. The net effect is a fish that can quickly dart through the water to catch live insects and flying ants. Aquarium specimens will usually eat prepared foods like tubifex worms and brine shrimp and may take to flake foods. The tank will require a good lid, as the Celebes Half-Beak will jump. This fish will spend most of its time near the surface and may school with other Half-Beaks. The males have more color and a modified anal fin, females usually lack color in the fleshy protuberance. While there should be plenty of open swimming areas, the aquarium should also have some covered areas for seclusion.
