The body color of this freshwater fish will vary in shades of green, appearing as anything from emerald green to a darker green. Using a good quality lightbulb above the aquarium will help show the colors off on this fish, just like any other rainbow. Rainbows are a fantastic fish for the beginning aquarist who has a 50 gallon or larger tank. This fish will be most comfortable in groups, so four or more are recommended. Flake, pellet, and frozen food will all be readily accepted by this fish. Rainbows are active swimmers which usually swim at mid level in the aquarium, so they work well with both bottom and top dwelling fish as tank mates.
