A unique, peaceful aquarium addition who has actually benefited humans through its use in eye research. Skimming along the surface of the water in search of food (floating or flying bugs in its native South America), the Anableps can see simultaneously above and below the water line. A livebearer, this fish lives in schools and swims along the freshwater and brackish coasts of Brazilian waters. Growing up to a foot in the wild, captive specimens typically reach no more than six inches. Floating foods will suit it well and the Anableps does not seem to be particular.
