The Texas Cichlid is fairly territorial and may not tolerate others of its kind in the same aquarium. As with most New World cichlids, the Texas will constantly dig in the substrate and rearrange the décor to its liking. It is difficult to sex this fish, though during spawning, most males will develop a nearly solid black back one-half of their body. Older males may develop a cranial hump. As an omnivore, the Texas Cichlid will accept most prepared foods and smaller live foods, especially worms.
