The Firemouth is a peaceful for a cichlid, but should still be considered a semi-aggressive fish. The blue-gray body with black markings is consistent in coloration between males and females. The bright red area which extends from the lower gill area and continuing across the belly, its most notable feature, is more prevalent in the males. Pairs and trios typically get along well, even in a community environment.
