Best Filter!!
6/1/2013
Pros:
Low Maintenance, VERY Quiet, Water stays Crystal Clear!
Cons:
Seal in lid will sometimes get twisted causing the filter to leak. Once the filter gets straightened out it works fine.
We have several fish tanks in our home (50 gal, 2-46 gal, 2-75 gal, 125 gal) We have Filstar filsters for all but 1 of them. We always purchase a filter that is rated higher than required for the tank size we need to ensure great filtration and they are awesome!
We had a Fluval that came with a used tank we purchased and the water doesn't stay nearly as clean! The fluval is on a 75 gal tank and rated for 125 gal tank and still can't keep that thing clean. It is a quiet filter but the water always has a slight green color to it and algea builds up so much faster. Definately would NOT recomend a FLUVAL!
Once established (takes a couple weeks for a brand new filter's/tanks to be established) the Filstars have been great! Low maintenance, water stays crystal clear, less algea build up. Can't complain here! Would buy them again and again!
Only Con we have noticed was with one we bought new, and also one that came with a used tank we purchased... for some reason the seal in the lid will become twisted not allowing a good seal. This caused the filter to leak and be a little noisy. Once we straightened it out we didn't have any more issues with them at all. It sealed fine and was super quiet.
I would definately recommend putting your filter in a small plastic wash bin or something water proof to prevent any water damage to your floor or a tank stand. (you can buy little rectangle wash basin's at most dollar stores that work great) We had one under the one that leaked due to the twisted seal and it saved our bacon!

Catastrophe waiting to happen
2/3/2013
Pros:
Clean Design, Multiple Trays
Cons:
Flimsy plastic, Huge leak potential
I purchased the XP3 (L) version of this filter to find that two of the baskets were damaged during shipping, but not to the point of being unusable. I hooked the unit up, checked for leaks and all looked well, until I came back an hour later to find water jetting out of the power cord hole. This is a known problem on this filter series, and is typically caused by the aqualock o-rings not seating properly.
I re-seated the lock several times without affect and contacted Pet Solutions and they felt it might be a poorly potted motor and offered to priority mail me a new head unit which I graciously accepted. I then inspected the head unit closely to first find the impeller mount was broken during shipping as well (not the source of the leak however), and the motor was well sealed in epoxy. So, the weak link of this pump is the aqualock mount and the seating of the o-rings.
This pump design is a disaster waiting to happen, and I wouldn't recommend it for any application (mine was for driving a chiller and chemical filtration on a reef tank). The plastic parts are also quite flimsy and brittle and will likely break over time and usage.

My new favorite filter
8/17/2012
Pros:
When there is a power outage, it stays self-contained. Easy to use, easy to adapt according to your specific needs.
I bought one of these after having a disaster with a traditional sump system, which resulted in water all over our wood laminate floors. This unit is self-contained, so if the power goes out, etc., there is no spill. I also like that you can fill it according to your specific needs. The refill packs are handy, as well.

Great filter
8/16/2012
Pros:
Quiet, durable, easy cleaning, reliable.
I purchased this filter several years ago for my 50 gallon aquarium. It has been one of my best investments! The equipment is quiet, easy to clean and has never giving me any problems. The replacement filters can be expensive; however, I found if you buy them on bulk. Which I did thru Pet Solutions, they are more affordable. Definitely a great investment!

Great Filter, Great Price
5/29/2012
Pros:
Easy to change media and clean filter pads
Cons:
wish the baskets would click into place when stacking
I've owned the xp3 filter for a few months now and love it! Keeps my 75 gallon tank with one turtle and around six relatively large fancy goldfish crystal clear. Set up was simple, it's so quiet you can't even tell it's on from three feet away, and extremely easy to service with its quick disconnect top.
Plan on buying the xp2 for my 55gal.

Better than my two Cascade 1500 or Fluval 404
5/17/2012
Pros:
Auto priming, no manual pumping required as with the Cascade or Fluval
Cons:
Plastic tubes are ugly green/blue color instead of black
This does not spill nor leak like the Cascade 1500.

Easy and efficient tank maintenance
5/9/2012
Pros:
Powerful and the fish love the current created by the outflow
I own 3 XP3 and 1 XP2 and I have to say they are the easiest canisters to use. They are maintained once monthly and keep my tank water clean and clear. Its media can be customized to meet your needs. I love the biomedia to keep my beneficial bacteria alive and well. I can add more at any time and the sponges only require a quick rinse in tank water. Easy use and care.
