Butis Butis (Crazy Fish)
Found from the Philippines to the East coast of Africa, the can inhabit saltwater, brackish water and freshwater environments. Best known as the Crazy Fish or Duckbill Sleeper, the Butis butis will sit motionless, resting on a leaf or piece of wood, until a tasty morel swims by its lair. Fortunately the Crazy Fish only grows to about 5 inches in length since it can swallow fish up to half of its size! The body is camouflaged with a silver green base with black horizontal stripes and spot spots. This fish prefers heavily planted aquariums with broad leaf plants and several “rooty” pieces of wood. If there is enough cover, several fish can be kept together, otherwise, best to keep singly in the aquarium. In the aquarium the Crazy Fish can be adapted to eat meaty foods like Krill and Bloodworms, and may accept carnivore pellet foods. The aquarium will require a good cover as the fish will attempt to jump.
