Like other freshwater fish from the rift lakes, aquarium water should be buffered to a specific pH level. For Tanganyikan Cichlids this range is 7.4 to 9.4 and several products are available to handle this requirement. The breeding stock of this fish hails from the Katabe region. N. brevis has a carnivorous diet filled primarily by zooplankton. Shells should be provided for these fish and when a mated pair is ready they will use the shell as a breeding area. The pair share guardianship of the fry with the slightly smaller female being the more aggressive. It is not unusual for the pair to "hide" in the snail shell for extended periods, and you will usually have to include the shell if you ever try to capture them.
