This fish has adapted over time to mimic the Valentini puffer as a defensive trait. The Valentini puffer is not tasty and has fewer predators than the Blacksaddle filefish so looking like the Valentini makes the Blacksaddle much safer. These fish are not well suited to a reef aquarium at all, since they enjoy eating invertebrates. Feeding this fish is fairly easy, as they will enjoy Mysis shrimp, marine algae such as seaweed sheets, and other meaty foods that are small enough to get into its mouth.
