Black Ruby Barb
The Black Ruby Barb, Puntius nigrofasciatus, is actually a tropical fish from India. This is an ideal fish for a beginner because he is a hardy peaceful community fish. This type of fish should be kept in a shoal/school. He is a small fish from the minnow family growing to 2.5" (6 cm) as an adult. The Black Ruby Barb enjoys a planted tank with some open swimming space. In the Barb tank set-up you will want to avoid bright lighting; one option is to provide shade with floating plants. The 20-30 gallon tank temperature should be somewhat cool at 70 -79° F (21-26° C). The Ruby Barb is also an easy keeper as far as feeding, readily accepting both flake foods and brine shrimp. Males are a much deeper ruby color than the females are, with females just showing ruby accents. These fish can nip the fins of tank mates if kept individually, but if kept as a school they will tend to not bother tank mates.
