This is an ideal fish for a beginner because he is a hardy peaceful community fish. This type of fish should be kept in a shoal/school. The Black Ruby Barb enjoys a planted tank with some open swimming space. In the Barb tank set-up you will want to avoid bright lighting; one option is to provide shade with floating plants. The Ruby Barb is also an easy keeper as far as feeding, readily accepting both flake foods and brine shrimp. Males are a much deeper ruby color than the females are, with females just showing ruby accents. These fish can nip the fins of tank mates if kept individually, but if kept as a school they will tend to not bother tank mates.
