Black Cardinalfish
Black Cardinalfish, Apogon melas, has the same basic body configuration as the Flame Cardinalfish, but has a dark (sometimes velvety black) sheen. Some specimens display even darker black spotting. A hardy fish that does great in groups, it will spend much of its time peering out from around rocks and under overhangs. If adding multiple specimens, it is important to add them simultaneously to prevent established fish from picking on newcomers. A school of Black Cardinalfish can add a dramatic effect when mixed with brighter, more vivid fish. With its maximum size of around three inches, it is a great size for smaller aquariums. Some specimens may choose to harm very small shrimp, but it is considered by most to be completely reef safe. It will accept a variety of foods including Brine Shrimp and bloodworms, and will typically accept flake food fairly easily.
