Ball Python
Ball pythons (python regius) are shy, gentle, relatively small pythons native to western and central Africa. They are equally comfortable on the ground and in trees. These snakes are crepuscular, which is a word that means they are most active around dawn and dusk. Called royal pythons in Europe, here in the United States we call them "balls" due to their habit of curling themselves up into a tight ball when they are nervous or scared, with their heads pulled firmly into the center. Typically in captivity these snakes will grow approximately one foot per year, usually reaching a length of 4 to 6 feet.
