Bala Shark

Bala Shark Scientific Name: Balantiocheilos Melanopterus
Recommended Aquarium: 55+ Gallons
Approx. Adult Size: 7 to 10 inches
Temperament: Semi Aggressive
Ease of Care: Easy
Diet: Omnivore
Native Waters: Borneo, Sumatra

This fish, more an omnivore than a carnivore, only resembles its namesake in the high dorsal fin. The Bala will swim at all levels of the aquarium, including the bottom where it will forage for food in scavenger fashion. Its steely-gray body is offset by the distinct black and white striping of its fins. The Bala Shark is an avid "jumper" and requires a covered aquarium. Active and peaceful, slightly alkaline water of a temperature around 76 degrees suits the Bala Shark just fine. With a typical size in captivity of around seven inches, it can grow to lengths over a foot, so it should be kept in an aquarium which affords plenty of room to grow.

Approximate arrival size for Bala Shark: Small 1 to 2 inches, Medium 2.25 to 3.5 inches
