B.B. Ornatus Cichlid
This animated character is known as the Bumble Bee Ornatus or, scientifically, as Pseudotropheus crabro. Older literature may list this fish as Pseudotropheus chameleo. It is sometimes known as the Chameleon Cichlid because of the rather sudden change from juvenile to adult coloration. Juveniles and females will show a yellow body with several black stripes, like the bumble bee it is named after. The adult males will turn almost jet black with just a hint of yellow in sub-dominant males. Unlike many other African Cichlids, if the aquarium is large enough (75+ gallons), the Bumble Bee can be kept in groups. Otherwise keep one male and several females to promote harmony. Not particularly territorial, the Ornatus will still require rock formations and hiding places. Reaching 5" in length, it often relies on its size to intimidate opponents. A typical mouth brooder, the female will incubate the eggs in her mouth for 14-21 days before releasing the fry. Care must be taken to avoiding over feeding as this may lead to digestive problems. Vegetable based foods should make up the majority of their diet with occasional meaty treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Given their appetite, weekly partial water changes can definitely benefit their overall health in the home aquarium.
Approximate Arrival Size for B. B. Ornatus Cichlid: 1 to 2.5 in.
