Arrow Crab

Arrow Crabs, Stenorhynchus seticornis, are a native from Atlantic reefs bordering the Americas. This crab is usually the first on the scene when uneaten food becomes available. Meaty foods are a favorite of this crab. Arrow crabs are reported predators of bristleworms and can assist with the removal of these reef pests. Larger arrow crabs may become destructive in a reef aquarium however. They are known to prey on sessile invertebrates such as feather dusters. Small, slow fish can also be seen as prey for this crab. They will often be found with bits of uneaten food stuck to their carapace for a later snack.

Notes: This species must molt in order to grow. Generally at night, it will lay on its back and exit its exoskeleton. A new exoskeleton is excreted and will harden over a period of several hours. The animal is vulnerable at this time and should not be disturbed. Proper iodine levels assist with successful molting.
